Essential Oils & Age: Important Do's and Don'ts for Children and Older Adults

Essential oils can be powerful allies in natural wellness, but they are also highly concentrated plant extracts. Because of this potency, age matters when it comes to safe and responsible use. Young children and older adults are often more sensitive to essential oils, and what works well for one person may not be appropriate for another.

Understanding how age affects essential oil use helps ensure that these beautiful plant remedies remain both beneficial and safe.

Why Age Matters with Essential Oils

Our bodies change throughout life.

  • Children’s systems—including their skin, lungs, and liver—are still developing.

  • Older adults may process substances more slowly and can have increased skin sensitivity, chronic conditions, or medication interactions.

Because of these differences, extra care, lighter dilution, and thoughtful oil selection are essential at both ends of the age spectrum.

Essential Oils & Young Children: Safety First

Extra Dilution Is Key

Children generally require much lower dilutions than adults. Their skin absorbs oils more quickly, which means even small amounts can feel overwhelming to their system.

When in doubt, less is always more.

Oils to Avoid for Children Six and Under

Certain essential oils should be avoided entirely for young children—even in small amounts—because they can cause serious reactions.

These oils should be avoided because they naturally contain methyl salicylate, a compound related to aspirin, which can be toxic for young children.

Avoid for children under six and use cautiously and limited between the ages of 6-10:

  • Wintergreen

  • Birch

These oils can pose serious risks and should not be used topically, aromatically, or internally for young children.

These oils can cause breathing difficulties, neurological reactions, or skin irritation in young children. Avoid for children under six and use cautiously and limited between the ages of 6-10:

  • Peppermint

  • Eucalyptus (all varieties, especially globulus and radiata)

  • Rosemary

  • Camphor

  • Hyssop

  • Spike Lavender

  • Oregano

  • Thyme

  • Clove

  • Cinnamon Bark or Leaf

The above oils are often associated with:

  • Labored or slowed breathing

  • Nervous system overstimulation

  • Skin burning or irritation

Ketones can be too stimulating for a child's developing nervous system. Oils high in Ketones and should be Avoided for children under six and use cautiously and limited between the ages of 6-10::

  • Sage

  • Spanish Sage

  • Tansy

  • Mugwort

  • Wormwood

Important Note About Babies & Essential Oils

Essential oils should not be used on babies unless explicitly approved by a pediatrician.

Babies’ skin is extremely delicate, and their bodies cannot metabolize essential oils the same way older children or adults can. Even gentle oils may be too stimulating for an infant’s developing system.

If you are considering any essential oil use for a baby, always:

  • Consult your pediatrician first

  • Avoid topical use unless professionally guided

  • Never apply oils directly to a baby’s skin without approval

Essential Oils & Older Adults: Gentle and Intentional Use

As we age, our skin becomes thinner and more sensitive, and the body may process substances more slowly. Older adults may also be managing chronic conditions or medications that can interact with essential oils.

Helpful Guidelines for Seniors

  • Use lower dilutions than standard adult recommendations

  • Perform a patch test before topical use

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to strong aromas

  • Be cautious with stimulating oils

Essential oils should support comfort and well-being—not overwhelm the senses.

General Do’s & Don’ts for Age-Sensitive Use

✔️ Do:

  • Dilute more for children and older adults

  • Choose gentle oils appropriate for age

  • Listen to the body’s response

  • When unsure, consult a qualified healthcare provider

❌ Don’t:

  • Assume adult dosages apply to everyone

  • Use restricted oils on children

  • Apply essential oils to babies without medical approval

  • Ignore sensitivity reactions such as redness, headaches, or breathing discomfort
